# Does Perplexity’s Academic focus exclude ordinary web sources?

When I choose [Academic for a Perplexity search](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/162295/when-is-perplexitys-academic-search-mode-worth-using), I’m unsure whether that means results are limited to scholarly material or whether the setting just gives academic sources more weight. For a topic where recent reporting and research papers both matter, I’d like to know what actually changes in the source mix.

Have you compared the same query with Academic selected and with the default search? I’m especially interested in whether non-academic sources still appear in the cited results.
