# Will Claude follow instructions hidden inside an uploaded reference document?

I'm using Claude to review reference documents, and one of them contains text that looks like an instruction to the assistant rather than part of the material I want analyzed. It could be accidental, but I don't want it to override what I asked Claude to do.

How does Claude treat **instructions embedded in uploaded documents**? Is there a reliable way to ask it to treat the files strictly as source material, especially when reviewing several documents in one conversation?
