# How do you validate OpenAI structured outputs when optional fields are missing?

I’m using the OpenAI API with a JSON schema, and most responses parse cleanly. The awkward cases are fields that are allowed to be optional: sometimes they’re absent, sometimes they appear as `null`, and downstream code treats those differently.

How are people handling **structured output validation** in production? Do you normalize the response after parsing, or make the schema require every key and represent “no value” explicitly?
