# Why do Perplexity citations sometimes show dates that don’t match the page?

I’ve noticed that a Perplexity citation can show a date that differs from the date printed on the linked article. For news searches, that makes it hard to tell whether the source is genuinely recent or whether the displayed date refers to something else.

Does the citation date represent publication, an update, or when Perplexity found the page? I’m curious whether others have seen this with syndicated stories or pages that are revised after publication.
