# How should I manage conversation state across OpenAI Responses API sessions?

I’m building a chat feature with the OpenAI Responses API and am unsure what the cleanest approach is when a user returns later or opens a second device. Should I keep a response ID and continue from it, or store the conversation history in my own database and send it again?

I’m also wondering how people avoid accidentally mixing state between users, especially when requests are retried. What has worked reliably for managing **conversation state** in a real application?
