# Can Claude extract footnotes and table references from long PDFs reliably?

I’m testing Claude on long reports that mix prose, tables, footnotes, and references like “see Table 4 on page 38.” It often gives a useful summary, but I’m less confident when I ask it to connect a footnote to the right table or preserve the page reference.

Has anyone found a dependable way to check **footnotes and table references** in this kind of document? I’m trying to figure out whether the weak spot is the PDF itself, the prompt, or simply a task that needs a separate verification step.
