# How Do I Fix SQL Server Error 26 – Error Locating Server/Instance Specified?

SQL Server Error 26 generally occurs when the client cannot locate the specified SQL Server instance. It is usually a server discovery, instance configuration, or network connectivity issue, rather than database corruption.

Start by verifying the SQL Server and instance names. Then check whether the SQL Server service is running, enable the required network protocols such as TCP/IP, and make sure SQL Server Browser is running when connecting to a named instance. Firewall rules should also allow the required SQL Server traffic.

If other databases on the same instance are accessible but a particular database remains unavailable after connectivity is restored, investigate the database separately. Check its state and review the SQL Server error logs for signs of MDF/NDF corruption or attachment problems.

In cases where the underlying database files are damaged, **SysTools SQL Recovery Tool** can be used to analyze and recover data from MDF/NDF files. This is particularly relevant when fixing Error 26 restores the server connection but the affected database still cannot be mounted or accessed.

Therefore, Error 26 should first be treated as a connectivity problem. Database recovery should only be considered when there is separate evidence that the database files themselves are corrupted.

SQL Server Error 26 means the client couldn’t locate the server or instance you asked it to connect to. It often comes down to an instance-name mismatch or a named instance that isn’t being discovered over the network.

## Check the server and instance name

In SSMS or your application’s connection settings, confirm the server name is correct. A default instance is usually entered as `SERVERNAME`; a named instance uses `SERVERNAME\INSTANCENAME`. For a local SQL Express installation, the instance is often `.\SQLEXPRESS`, though it may have been given a different name.

Also check that the SQL Server Database Engine service for that exact instance is running. Seeing a server in a list does not necessarily mean its database service is available.

## If you’re connecting to another computer

- In SQL Server Configuration Manager, confirm that TCP/IP is enabled for the instance. Restart the SQL Server service after changing its network protocols.
- If you use a named instance with a dynamic port, make sure the SQL Server Browser service is running and UDP port 1434 is allowed through the firewall. Browser helps clients discover which port the instance is using.
- Alternatively, assign the instance a fixed TCP port, allow that port through the firewall, and connect using `SERVERNAME,PORT`. When specifying the port directly, SQL Server Browser discovery is not needed.
- Check that the network or host firewall allows the connection, and that the server can be reached from the client machine.

Try connecting locally on the SQL Server computer first. If that works but a remote connection fails, focus on TCP/IP, the instance’s port, Browser discovery, and firewall rules. If it fails locally too, recheck the instance name and service status.

SQL Server Error 26 usually appears when the client cannot find or reach the specified SQL Server instance. The first things to check are the server/instance name, SQL Server service, SQL Browser service, network settings, and firewall.

## Try these steps:

- **Check the server and instance name** for typing errors. For a local SQL Express instance, a name such as `.\SQLEXPRESS` may be required.
- **Make sure SQL Server is running** on the target computer.
- If you are using a **named instance**, check that SQL Server Browser is running.
- Verify that the required **TCP/IP protocol** is enabled in SQL Server Configuration Manager.
- For a remote SQL Server, check that the server is reachable and that the firewall is not blocking the connection.

If the connection problem is accompanied by a corrupt, damaged, or inaccessible MDF/NDF database file, that is a different issue. In that situation, **Softaken SQL Recovery Software** can be considered for recovering data from corrupt MDF/NDF files. It supports previewing recovered database data before saving it.

So, for Error 26 itself, start with the server/instance and connectivity settings rather than immediately using a recovery tool.
