# Claude Says Conversation Is Too Long? Here’s How to Fix It

**Claude says my conversation is too long and it won't take any more messages. I got two days of work in this chat. Please tell me I haven't lost it.**

You haven't lost anything. The chat is still there, you just can't add to it. You've filled up the amount of text it can hold at once.

Here's what I did when it happened to me. Scroll back through and copy out the things that matter, the final version of the code, the decisions you made, anything you'd need to explain to a new person. Then open a new chat and paste that in as your first message with a line like "here's where we got to, let's continue".

If it lets you send one more short message, ask it to write that summary for you. Sometimes it will, sometimes it won't.

Going forward, if you've got reference documents, put them in a Project instead of the chat. They don't count against the chat length that way.
