# Claude Pro Hit Its Limit After 8 Messages? Here's Why

I felt the same until I understood how it counts. It's not counting messages. It's counting how much text it has to read and write. And here's the catch: every time you send a message, it re-reads the entire chat from the beginning, including any files you uploaded.

So if you dropped a big PDF in at the start, every one of those 8 messages was actually "read this whole PDF again plus the new question". That adds up fast.

What I do now: only upload the pages I actually need, not the whole document. Start a new chat once I'm done with a task instead of carrying on in the same one forever. And for simple stuff like rewording an email, I switch to the smaller model. Since doing this, I rarely hit the limit.

One thing people often overlook with AI is how tokens are used. Every time you send a prompt, the AI has to process not only your new question but, in many cases, part of the previous conversation as well. So the longer your chat becomes, the more tokens it may need to process.

If you want to save tokens, keep your prompts short and specific. Don’t repeat the same information in every message, and avoid keeping one conversation going forever when you’ve already finished a particular task.

For example, instead of writing a huge prompt every time, give the AI the important information once and then ask short follow-up questions. If the conversation has become very long, starting a new chat and carrying over only the important context can also help.

Files can consume tokens too, especially large documents. If you only need information from a few pages, there’s no point giving the AI a 200-page document every time.

Basically, think of tokens as the amount of text the AI has to read and generate. The less unnecessary text you make it process, the more efficiently you can use your AI limits. You don't need to make every prompt tiny, though—just remove the unnecessary stuff.
