A phishing attack is a type of social engineering attack where the attacker sends a fraudulent email or text message that appears to be from a legitimate source, such as a bank or credit card company. The goal of the attack is to trick the recipient into clicking on a malicious link or opening an attachment that contains malware.

Once the malware is installed on the victim's computer, the attacker can steal personal information, such as passwords, credit card numbers, and Social Security numbers. They can also use the malware to take control of the victim's computer and use it for malicious purposes, such as sending spam or launching denial-of-service attacks.

There are a number of things that users can do to protect themselves from phishing attacks:

- **Be suspicious of any email or text message that asks for personal information.** Legitimate companies will never ask for this information over email or text message.
- **Don't click on links in emails or text messages from people you don't know.** Instead, type the website address into your browser yourself.
- **Be careful about opening attachments in emails or text messages from people you don't know.** Even if the attachment appears to be from a legitimate source, it could contain malware.
- **Use a security solution that includes anti-phishing protection.** This will help to identify and block phishing emails before they reach your inbox.

By following these tips, you can help to protect yourself from phishing attacks.

Here are some additional tips for spotting phishing emails:

- The email may have a poor or unprofessional appearance.
- The email may contain grammatical errors or typos.
