Web analytics relies on these two essential metrics **Pages [Views](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/12838/compile-views-in-asp-dot-net-mvc)** and **Sessions** which evaluate separate elements regarding user engagement.

Website [page](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/13031/why-to-make-a-wikipedia-page) count through **Page Views** tracks the full number of times website pages receive views. A page view includes each instance a web page gets loaded or refreshed regardless of how many users continue or begin using the site. Every eventual reload of a page by a visitor receives independent page view tracking regardless of session continuity. The popularity of particular website pages becomes easily visible through this metric.

A website **session** tracks and includes every interaction that users perform throughout their time spent on a particular website. The website tracking begins when a visitor arrives on the site and finishes after users fail to take any actions for 30 minutes. Each visitor who stays on the site for 30 minutes or less within the same time period generates one session regardless of visiting new webpages. Overarching website engagement becomes clearer when using Sessions because they track how users move between different pages on the site.

The count of page views shows how many times pages receive views but Sessions track complete visitor activities that take place on the site. Several page views could appear within one session yet page views do not automatically represent total unique user visits to the site.
