Search engines interpret **keyword proximity** as the quantitative relationship between two keywords when they appear in a document segment of a sentence, phrase, or paragraph. The distance between keywords affects SEO performance since search engines use them to assess content relevance during their evaluations.

Search engines evaluate search keywords as more applicable if they appear near one another. Search engines judge webpages with "best digital marketing strategies for startups" placed together more favorably than pages whose keyword string reads "marketing is best when strategies are digital".

## Types of Keyword Proximity:

- **Tight Proximity:** Keywords that sit next to each other in direct proximity to one another follow the same sequence as the search query. Using this search strategy provides the optimal results for queries that need exact phrase matches.
- **Loose Proximity:** The content includes keywords yet they do not appear directly adjacent to each other. While effective it fails to rank at the same level as when keywords sit near one another in the text.

Better SEO results occur with natural placement of keywords when keywords are placed near each other as this enhances readability and leads to improved rankings. The use of keyword stuffing by search engine algorithms leads to penalties thus users should avoid using this practice.
