Common heart disease

### Coronary heart disease

The most common heart disease in Scotland is coronary artery disease. This happens when the coronary arteries, the blood vessels of the heart, become narrowed or blocked and cannot supply enough blood to the heart.

### Angina, Chest pain

Angina is pain or discomfort in the chest, arms, neck, stomach, or jaw that occurs when blood flow to the heart is restricted due to the narrowing of the arteries. This blockage is called atheroma. Angina is not a disease in itself, but a symptom of coronary artery disease.

Angina is a heartfelt way of saying you're not getting enough oxygen when you're doing intense things or feeling stressed. Many people learn to understand how much activity is causing their angina attack. This is called stable angina.

### Heart attack

A heart attack, also known as a myocardial infarction or MI, occurs when blood flow to part of the heart muscle is completely cut off. This is usually due to the breakdown of fat residues and the formation of blood clots in the coronary arteries. This may damage the portion of the myocardium supplied by the coronary artery in question.

### Heart failure

When the heart cannot pump effectively, the heart muscle cannot meet the body's need for blood and oxygen, and various symptoms such as fatigue and shortness of breath develop in the body. This is called [heart failure](https://www.mindstick.com/news/2727/alternative-heart-failure-treatments-pros-and-cons) because the heart does not work efficiently.

### Arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm)

The heart muscle has an electrical system that helps stimulate the heartbeat. When the heart's electrical signals are cut or interrupted, the heart can beat too fast (tachycardia), beat too slowly (bradycardia), or become irregular. This is called arrhythmia.

### Heart valve disease

Alves open and close to regulate blood flow in the heart. Problems with the valves increase the load on the heart and can strain the heart muscle. This can lead to a variety of symptoms, including:

- shortness of breath

- weakness

### Congenital heart disease

Congenital heart disease occurs when an abnormality or defect occurs in the structure of the fetal heart that develops in the womb. A baby can be born with only one defect or more than one. Some types of congenital heart diseases become life-threatening for newborns over time.
