# Obesity and Heart Diseases

Obesity is a [common problem](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/94577/what-is-the-most-common-problem-you-have-with-your-iphone-both-hardware-and-software-related) in the [United States](https://www.mindstick.com/news/2228/the-united-states-claims-seagate-broke-export-laws-by-selling-huawei-hard-drives). According to [current research](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/158132/what-are-some-of-the-current-research-areas-in-it), one in three Americans is obese. Obesity and overweight are associated with several variables that [increase the risk](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/300207/health-risks-related-to-obesity) of cardiovascular disease (heart attack and stroke):

- **High blood lipids, especially triglycerides, [LDL cholesterol](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/story/4296/7-tips-to-remove-dead-ldl-cholesterol-from-body), total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol, and low HDL cholesterol**
- **blood pressure too high**
- **Type 2 diabetes (also known as adult-onset diabetes) is characterized by impaired glucose tolerance.**
- **Metabolic syndrome is a condition in which the body's metabolism is impaired.**
- **Obesity and overweight are also linked to [high blood pressure](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/300301/diagnosis-of-high-blood-pressure) and a larger left ventricle (left ventricular hypertrophy), all of which increase the [risk of heart](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/105441/how-to-reduce-the-risk-of-heart-disease) failure.**
- Overweight and obesity have also been associated with certain malignancies, gallbladder problems, and osteoarthritis.

### Are you at a higher risk?

Two measurements are used to see if your weight is linked to an increased risk of [heart disease](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/114582/heart-disease-risk-and-its-diagnosed):

- BMI (Body Mass Index) is a measurement of (BMI).

### Waist Measurement

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a measurement of (BMI).

Obesity is measured using a mathematical formula that takes into account a person's [height and weight](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/12970/how-to-set-layout-height-and-weight-in-percentage-android). It may be less accurate for athletes or the elderly who have lost muscle mass.

- **Underweight is defined as a body mass index (BMI) under 18.5 pounds.**
- **Normal is between 18.5 and 24.9.**
- **25.0 - 29.9 pounds overweight**
- **30.0 and Above Obesity Levels**

Those who are [overweight or obese](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/300206/what-is-obesity) and have two or more risk factors for heart disease should lose weight to reduce their risk. Calculate your BMI using the body mass indicator below.

### waist circumference

Your waist circumference is the measurement taken just above your navel. It accurately predicts belly fat, a risk factor for heart disease. A waist size greater than 40 inches in men and 35 inches in women increases the risk.

### What should I do next?

A little weight loss can significantly reduce your risk of heart disease.
