# Ad Tool Facebook Built to Fight Disinformation Doesn’t Work as Advertised

Faced with a rising backlash over the spread of disinformation in the aftermath of the 2016 [elections](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/324516/the-curious-case-of-bihar-elections-in-2020), [Facebook](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/44467/successful-companies-that-utilize-facebook-as-a-social-media-platform) last year [came up](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/41115/who-came-up-with-the-10-percent-plan-what-did-this-plan-say) with a seemingly straightforward solution: It created an online [library](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/34615/software-framework-vs-library) of all the advertisements on the [social network](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/12698/how-to-use-social-networks-to-sell-more-at-christmas).

[Transparency](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/336962/how-blockchain-technology-be-applied-to-improve-transparency-in-industries), it decided, was the best disinfectant.

Ads would stay in the library for seven years, letting ordinary users see who was pushing what [messages](https://www.mindstick.com/news/4166/google-rolling-out-gemini-extensions-for-messages-whatsapp-and-spotify) and how much they were paying to do it. Facebook gave [researchers](https://www.mindstick.com/news/1544/mars-looks-more-seismically-active-than-before-thought-said-researchers) and journalists deeper access, allowing them to extract information directly from the library so they could create their own [databases](https://www.mindstick.com/startup/34/airbyte-the-open-source-platform-simplifying-data-integration-for-warehouses-lakes-and-databases) and tools to analyze the ads — and ferret out disinformation that had slipped past the social network’s safeguards.
