# Signaling and Communication in Plants

Plants can detect typical, endogenous cell molecules or their fragments when they are discharged at higher concentrations into the extracellular space, much like other eukaryotic organisms can. This happens as a result of mechanical or cellular stress brought on by herbivore and pathogen attack. The endogenous substances then assist in triggering local and systemic defense-related reactions, or the plant's innate immunity (Howe and Jander, 2008; Boller and Felix, 2009).

The [detection](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/301556/the-growing-environmental-risks-of-e-waste) of certain insect-derived [pathogen-associated [molecular](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/49245/when-and-who-invented-the-molecular-hypothesis) patterns (PAMPs) (Ausubel, 2005)] or herbivore-derived [herbivore-associated molecular patterns (HAMPs) (Mithöfer and Boland, 2008)] signals, [as well as](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/48044/who-won-the-wimbledon-singles-as-well-as-the-world-table-tennis-singles-crown) signals from the wounded plant cells, triggers the entire dynamic immune response.

## Brief Overview of Plant Volatiles

Numerous research demonstrating the adaptability of VOCs, especially herbivory-induced plant volatiles, are available (HIPVs). In addition to triggering both [direct and indirect](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/104452/what-is-the-difference-between-direct-and-indirect-taxes) plant [defenses against](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/97139/what-are-the-best-defenses-against-a-brute-force-login-attack) herbivores, HIPVs are also known to mediate a wide range of interactions between plants and insects (Turlings et al., 1990; De Moraes et al., 1998, 2001; Hoballah and Turlings, 2001). In many [plant species](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/113332/how-do-americans-celebrate-and-preserve-native-plant-species), HIPVs are engaged in deterring herbivores, luring their trophic-level predators to them, and upregulating and priming defense responses (Kessler and Baldwin, 2002; Arimura et al., 2004; Engelberth et al., 2004; Kessler et al., 2006; Arimura and Pearse, 2017).

## Pitfalls in Standardization: Wounding Versus Wounding

[Standardization](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/301566/impact-of-technology-on-environment) and reproducibility of such approaches, especially with regard to the comparability of produced results, are [essential components](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/94001/what-do-you-think-about-the-essential-components-of-a-good-web-content) of all investigations utilizing artificial wounding. Mechanical damage was shown to be sufficient to generate responses in a variety of species that are analogous to those seen following herbivore feeding, as outlined by Heil, but not always (Heil, 2009). The flexibility of the [procedure](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/72305/who-is-the-chairman-of-the-committee-which-was-set-up-to-review-the-defence-procurement-procedure-dpp-2016-and-defence-procurement-manual-dpm-2009) itself is largely to blame for the ambiguity of reports involving artificial wounds. Waterman et al. (2019) recently brought [attention](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/45144/what-is-a-calling-attention) to the fact that mechanical damage can be executed by cutting, scraping, piercing, grinding, or pinching of leaf sections with varying sizes while in- or excluding the midrip, leading to extremely diverse reactions even within the same species.
