Consider your technological capabilities

There's a lot to be said from digital textbooks given the growing size of more traditional, print books. If you've got a full schedule and no time to head back to your residence to pick up your books, digital texts can be a lifesaver. Before you commit, make sure that you're able to access your digital texts.

This means first that you are able to navigate your specific technology successfully and that you have the appropriate technology to access your essay online and article writing . If you've only got a desktop computer (or a heavy laptop) a digital text may not be the most convenient way to access your course materials. A tablet or small laptop may be the most usable device, so consider upgrading technology or sticking with more traditional texts.

Determine how you expect to use your text

If you're a person who enjoys the act of carrying around a physical book and highlighting it, a digital text probably won't be a good fit. While you can sometimes add notes or highlight the digital text, the overall experience is very different. Digital texts can be more difficult to flip through and harder to access. On the other hand, many have search functions that can make it easier to find certain information. Look at the particular format of the possible text before you decide which way to go (assuming you've got options).

You may also think about how long you'll be staring at your text. Some digital texts can be very trying on your eyes, so know what you're getting yourself into. Think about screen size, text size, and lighting when you make your decision.

Ultimately, the decision to use either a traditional print text or a digital text will be a personal preference. If you aren't sure, you can always transition slowly, beginning with one digital text at a time or easing into it by reading for pleasure on a digital device.

For some people, hearing a text will not be sufficient. The act of reading and taking notes on a text are an essential part of the learning process. For others, hearing the text is both convenient and effective. There are a number of tests available to help you identify how you learn best, so take an assessment or two and let the results direct you toward a particular text. Also consider approaching a course with multiple text options. An audio book can be useful some of the time, but you may
