# International Ice Hockey Federation

It is based in Zurich, Switzerland, and has 81 members. It manages international ice hockey tournaments and maintains the IIHF World Ranking. Although the IIHF governs international [competitions](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/39680/name-the-indian-shooter-from-haryana-who-won-the-women-s-25m-pistol-gold-with-a-new-record-at-the-61st-national-shooting-championship-competitions), the IIHF has no authority on hockey in [North America](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/51329/what-event-ensured-england-safe-passage-to-colonize-north-america) or the rules of the [National Hockey](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/47415/when-was-the-national-hockey-league-of-north-america-inaugurated) League (NHL). Hockey Canada and USA Hockey federations have their own rulebooks, while non-North American federations usually follow the IIHF rules.\

Decisions of the IIHF can be appealed through the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland.\

The IIHF maintains its own [hall of fame](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/37853/benjamin-banneker-is-in-the-hall-of-fame) for international ice hockey. The IIHF Hall of Fame was founded in 1997, and has been located within the Hockey Hall of Fame since 1998. \
