# What is an SSL certificate and what is its purpose?

An SSL certificate ensures that all data generated between your browser and the website is fully encrypted before it is transmitted over the Internet. In fact, only the [database](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/160888/how-much-does-it-cost-to-get-training-in-database-in-mindstick-training) to which you are sending your data will decrypt the encrypted data.
