# Google's history

Google's [history](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/84646/the-history-of-starbucks-need-a-sip-of-coffee-to-know-about-it-s-evolution) began in 1995 when Larry Page met Sergey Brin. At the time Larry Page was a Ph.D. student at Standford [University](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/43855/how-can-i-get-admission-in-avinashilinagam-university-for-women), and Sergey was considering studying there. In 1996 Larry and Sergey began work on a [search engine](https://www.mindstick.com/services/search-engine-optimization) called BackRub.\

The name comes from the [algorithms](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/302185/is-it-necessary-for-a-programmer-to-learn-data-structures-and-algorithms) ranking for how many "back-links" a page has. This engine worked on the [Stanford](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/37249/what-stats-do-i-need-to-play-for-the-stanford-basketball-team) servers for more than a year which eventually clogged up the bandwidth. Google.com was registered on September 15th, 1997.

[Google](https://www.google.com/), is a play on words of "googol" which is a mathematical term for the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. It is rumored that this reflects the [founders](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/30326/who-are-the-founders-of-google)' [mission](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/31959/which-ministry-launched-mission-sampark) to organize the [infinite](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/113677/experience-infinite-sweetness-your-ultimate-guide-to-cookie-clicker) amount of [information on the internet](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/story/3315/is-consuming-too-much-information-on-the-internet-bad).\
