# Kotlin is now Google’s favorite language for Android app development

**Google announced** that the **Kotlin [programming language](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/156801/write-a-program-for-reverse-a-word-in-sentence-in-any-programming-language)** is presently its favored language for Android application [developers](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/302688/handling-errors-in-rust-a-comprehensive-guide-for-developers)**.**\
“**[Android development](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/159904/is-android-development-considered-software-engineering)** will turn out to be progressively Kotlin-first,' Google writes in today's announcement. “Numerous new Jetpack APIs and features will be offered first in Kotlin. In case you're beginning a new project, you ought to compose it in Kotlin; code is written in Kotlin often mean much less code for you–less code to type, test, and maintain.”

It was just two years back, at I/O 2017, that Google declared help for Kotlin in its **[Android Studio](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/51181/how-to-create-a-log-error-file-in-android-studio-and-also-perform-read-write-operation-in-a-file)** IDE. That came as a bit of a surprise, given that Java had long been the preferred **language for** [Android application development](https://www.mindstick.com/services/mobile-app-development), but few announcements at that year’s I/O got more applause. Over the course of the most recent two years, **Kotlin popularity** has only increased. \
According to Google, more than 50% of developers by **Android experts** use languages to build their [applications](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/85123/latest-applications-and-innovations-in-sports-analytics-wearables-and-broadcasting) and in the most recent [Stack Overflow](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/159515/prevent-stack-overflow-in-dsa) [developer](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/157260/variation-between-web-designer-and-web-developer) survey, it ranks as the fourth most preferred programming language.\
\
With that, it makes sense for Google to expand its Kotlin support. 'We're reporting that the following huge step that we’re making is that we’re going Kotlin-first,” Chet Haase, chief advocate for Android, said.\
“We understand that not every person is on **Kotlin** at this moment, however, we trust that you ought to arrive. There may be valid reasons for you to still be using the **C++** and **Java [programming languages](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/86608/why-c-language-is-known-as-the-mother-of-all-programming-languages-in-modern-world)** and that is absolutely fine. These are not leaving.'
