Partition Hard Drive in Windows without Formatting

Anonymous User4148 05-Mar-2015

Hi everyone in this article I’m explaining about partition hard drive without formatting os.

Description:

Disk partitioning divides a hard drive into several partitions. Partitions are usually created when the hard drive is first being prepared for usage. Once a hard drive is divided into partitions, because of later changes on the computer and Operating System, an administrator or power user will be faced with the needs to resize partition, move partition, split partition, merge partitions, create a new partition for Windows 7 dual boot system and so on. So how to partition a hard drive without formatting the hard drive is very important to manage partitions for different usage.

Partition hard drive disk with Disk Management:

Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 built in Disk Management has the ability to create partition, delete partition, format partition, change drive letter and so on, if you want to re-partition hard drive without formatting the hard drive, you need to use third party partition manager.

Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 or Windows 7 built in Disk Management has the ability to shrink volume, extend volume, create volume, and delete volume, format volume and so on. If you want to extend system partition, there must be some unallocated space behind the system partition. If the unallocated space is clinging to other volume, how to move volume and let the unallocated space be clinging to the volume which you want to extend? Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 or Windows 7 built in Disk Management has no "Move Partition" feature, so a third party partition manager is required.

First of all go to “Computer” and then once you right-click on it another window

opens and then you should navigate to the option “Manage”.

A new window should open in which the size of the drive before shrink will be mentioned and the available space to shrink will be mentioned , and in the next line you will be asked to enter the amount of space you want to shrink and this will be the size of the new partition.

Caution: The space you enter must be within the limit of the available space displayed above.

After entering the values click on the option “Shrink” and wait for the process to complete. The time taken for the operation may be long depending upon the size of the disk and the space to be shrunk. Once the operation is completed a window appears showing unallocated space and the value is exactly the one you entered earlier. Select this unallocated space and on right clicking on it click on the option “New Simple Volume”.

A wizard will open up. Go through the wizard and fill in the values required. Usually the value needed to enter is the same one that you entered as the volume to be shrunk.

The drive newly created needs a letter to be assigned to it. Assign any letter of your choice as it does not make any difference.

A Format page will appear and in it carefully notice that the File System selected is “NTFS”. After this is done enter a name for your drive and then click on “Next” and then “Finish”.
